YOUTHCONNECT
(Connecting Youth to the World of Work)
In Rocky Mount, there is a need to provide services and opportunities for youth in our community. With a training and employment program, area youth can learn valuable skills when working during the summer. Unemployment for youth is at an all-time high. Unfortunately, there are limited opportunities for summer positions in the Rocky Mount community for area youth. As part of our overall strategy to engage and support area youth, the city desires to provide a youth employment and training program in the area. OIC has received a YOUTHCONNECT grant from the City of Rocky Mount to provide funding for our youth employment program.
This youth program meets Monday – Friday from 9:00a.m. – 3:00p.m. Youth will participate in this program for eight (8) weeks. The summer program
will run from June – August.
The Youth Connect Program aims to bridge the
gap between community youth and local businesses and programs that are instrumental in advancing their career and educational aspirations. Through a recent grant provided by Edgecombe County’s “Get Off the List” (GOTL) Project, OIC is now able to provide stipends for students in the Princeville/Tarboro
area, furthering their engagement in community -focused activities.
Key Activities and Partnerships:
Workshops and Community Activities
Youth Connect participants will engage in a range of workshops designed to build skills and foster community involvement. These workshops will focus on essential career skills, leadership development, and hands-on learning experiences.
Community Water Corps Program (Sponsored by ECU CoPe Program)

Youth Connect students will participate in community-based research, assessing water-related risks and gaining insights into environmental challenges affecting Eastern North Carolina.
Through these experiences, Youth Connect students will gain valuable skills in research, environmental awareness, and community leadership, positioning them for a future where
they can contribute meaningfully to the well-being and resilience of their communities.
